AIA trials mental wellbeing technology

Thursday 29th of November 2018

AIA employees s will have access to Medibio’s corporate health programme for six months, which promotes mental wellness by checking and monitoring symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress, and giving users a "wellness snapshot" that they can track and make improvements to over time.

The announcement follows AIA Australia’s recent AIA Vitality 4490 Summit, which explored the ways in which individuals and companies can collaborate to improve corporate health and wellbeing.

AIA Australia and New Zealand chief executive Damien Mu said that working with staff on the pilot resonated, because while awareness of the breadth and impact of mental health issues was increasing, people often did not reach out to their support network or employer until late in the process.

“We recognise the crucial role mental health plays in an individual’s overall health. We want to be involved in early intervention, education and awareness.”

While the purported rationale is commendable, I'd be keen to see that safeguards are in place - that will not only ensure the enrolled employees' "mental health" data is used SOLELY for the purported aims of the program, but that those justifiably wary employees who conscientiously object to enrolling (for legit' reasons and rational privacy concerns) are not singled out nor made to be 2nd class outcasts. Otherwise, the program will leave itself open to being fairly criticised as yet another inappropriate big brother totalitarian invasion into an individual employee's private life.
