First step for new Maraenui
Tuesday 23rd of August 2005
In what is believed to be a first for New Zealand, seven government agencies have come together to work on the ambitious Maraenui Urban Renewal Plan.
Maraenui has the lowest socio-economic statistics of any suburb in Napier, and the highest rates for crime, unemployment, teenage pregnancies and school dropouts. It is known as a Mongrel Mob stronghold and a tough neighbourhood.
The plan aims to revitalise the shopping centre, reduce crime, improve health and provide information that people need in the area.
"I believe this will be a first for New Zealand," project manager Thomas Heremia said.
He hopes the programme will also lead to demolition of some of the big Housing New Zealand units near the shopping centre and their replacement with modern single-storey houses.
The Maraenui Information Centre will open in the old pub – it was called The Local – in a few weeks. Run by Housing NZ and situated in the shopping centre, it will be a one-stop shop for information on many subjects.
