Peters Hopeful Of Superannuation Agreement Early Next Week

Wednesday 6th of June 2001
The Rt Hon Winston Peters MP, Leader of New Zealand First, today said that New Zealand First wants to resume superannuation discussions with Labour as soon as possible so that New Zealanders can at long last have some certainty on this issue.

"New Zealand First will be meeting with Dr Cullen on 13 June, two days after our all day Caucus on 11 June, so that this matter can be settled expeditiously. In the meantime officials are completing further work," said Mr Peters.

Mr Peters said that given the various political viewpoints being expressed on this issue it was important that the days of superannuation being a political football were numbered.

"Whilst the Alliance and Labour Parties may be happy to campaign on this issue if agreement is not reached New Zealand First believes that agreement between the parties is still preferable to the majority of New Zealanders. They have seen campaigns fought on superannuation in the past and, quite frankly, it is not something most Kiwis want to see debated all over again without any substantial agreement or progress made," said Mr Peters.
