Luxon “happy” with economic team – analysis

Thursday 19th of January 2023

Nicola Willis's post as finance spokesperson and party number two was never in doubt, and she keeps both roles.

Andrew Bayly keeps his post as spokesperson on Commerce and Consumer Affairs.

This position is vital for the lending industry in light of the continuing furor over the Credit Contracts and Consumer Finance Act (CCCFA).

A second tranche of reforms to these rules is expected within two months,.

But leaders in the lending industry have long signalled that this is not enough.

National has said the new rules will be jettisoned after the next election, and Bayly will be expected to keep this is sharp focus.

Though only elected in 2014, Bayley rose at one point to become number three in the party, but was later pushed back down.

But he has retained his ranking of number 14 in the current reshuffle.

In announcing the changes, the party leader Christopher Luxon said New Zealand was the best country in the world but was heading in the wrong direction under Labour.

“National will embrace pragmatic solutions for New Zealand’s toughest problems, like the rising cost of living, ram raids, and falling educational achievement,” he said.

Meanwhile, the independent commentator Ben Thomas says the fact that there has been little change among economic spokespeople indicates that Luxon is quite happy with the way these issues have been handled.

“The only real movement we saw is in environmental matters, climate change and RMA reform,” he said.

“Those are obviously relevant to business, but in terms of finance, economic development, small business and commerce, the lack of movement there probably reflects the fact that Chris Luxon is pretty happy with how the team has been performing.”
