Madayag to develop Jean Batten area design framework
Wednesday 20th of April 2005
The bank wants to demolish both buildings to erect a new Auckland headquarters. It agreed to a moratorium in March and Auckland City Council city planning manager John Duthie said today the moratorium would continue until the framework was completed.
When mayor Dick Hubbard announced the moratorium on 10 March he said the urban design panel & council staff would work with the BNZ on its design, and the panel would come up with a framework & brief. Once that was done a special hearings panel would consider the framework, then consider the bank’s development consent application.
There would then be a decision on whether the consent application should be notified.
The application has come up against a campaign to save the Jean Batten building, which is vacant after being used as a backpacker hostel. It sits between Fort & Shortland Sts.
