Net migrant inflow slips to 9350

Over the past 11 years the average annual inflow has been 13,500.

In the year to April 2003, the net permanent & long-term inflow was 42,050 and the overall net inflow, including short-term visitors, was 69,980. In the next year the total net visitor inflow dropped by nearly 75%, to 17,990, and the inflow of migrants fell to 25,710.

April is customarily a month for net outflows in total visitor & migrant movements – even in April 2003 the net outflow was 23,930. This time, it was 59,060 and the net outflow for the year was 4110.

The net migrant inflow from the UK for the April 2005 year fell 7% to 9200. The net inflow from Asia fell from 16,500 t0 7200.

The net outflow to Australia rose from 11,400 to 18,200.

Total short-term visitor numbers fell 5% (by 9600) to 174,800 for the month, which Statistics NZ said was partly attributable to Easter moving from April last year to March this year.
