New homes face compulsory energy efficiency ratings

Thursday 14th of September 2006
The scheme will be voluntary to begin with, but will be compulsory for new homes and renovations that require consent within two years. Government agency the Energy Efficiency Conservation Authority says 300,000 homes built before 1977 have insufficient insulation. The concept is similar to the five-star rating on appliances. Homebuyers and renters will be able to compare homes for energy efficiency. The scheme is scheduled to
start in December next year.
