BNZ latest to cut KiwiSaver fees

Thursday 16th of September 2021

The fund manager today announced it would drop the fee on all its KiwiSaver and YouWealth funds to 0.45% at the end of the month.

BNZ’s growth fund previously charged 0.63% and its regular balanced fund billed 0.62% – both are falling 17 basis points.

However, in order to win the government tender to be a default provider BNZ created a second balanced fund that charges even less, at just 0.35%. Its cash fund charges just 0.3%.

The average default fund has been charging 0.49%, while the average growth fund fee is more that 1% plus a $28 membership fee.

Market regulators have been pressuring providers to lower rates, saying fees have not fallen enough considering how much the industry has grown.

General manager of wealth, Peter Forster said increasing scale allows the bank to “continually drive down costs”.

“We’re committed to frequently reviewing our fees to ensure these benefits get passed on, but never at the expense of the quality of our products,” he said.

BNZ dropped its fixed membership fee in 2019, something which the Financial Markets Authority has effectively told all KiwiSaver providers to do.
