NZ Super Fund v Aust funds. Which has done better?

Wednesday 27th of June 2012

Investment manager Peter Urbani has done a comparison of the performance of the fund against the average Australian superannuation fund using data from APRA's Annual Superannuation Bulletin.

The analysis is over an eight year period to the end of June 2011.

Overall the Compound Annual Average Growth ( CAGR) of NZ Super was 7.62% p.a. over the period versus  7.52% p.a. of the average Australian Superfund.

"This compares favourably. However, the annual volatility of the NZ Super has been considerably higher at 15.26% versus the 10.48% of the average Australian Fund."

This is illustrated in the attached chart where you can see the larger drawdown of NZ Super in the 2008 Crisis period.
