Monday 3rd of September 2018
Douglas, who finished up at Morningstar on Friday,
He says many active fund managers use passive in their portfolios for good reasons. One being for tactical asset allocation in markets which are hard to get in and out of, such as some in emerging markets.
It's easier to get in and out of markets using passive funds as opposed to active management or individual securities.
Active managers may use passive funds to help bring their fees down, he says. The best example here is in KiwiSaver where firms like ANZ include some passive investments in their portfolio.
There is also increasing pressure on fees and it's positive that managers are using passive funds to help bring down the over cost of investing.
