[Opinion] Stuff the mainstream media

Tuesday 30th of November 2021

New Zealand's largest news website Stuff is running a series it calls "Mega Landlords".

It's a classic example of how the mainstream media don't understand property investing and just want to sensationalise stories to drive traffic.

As part of its introduction Stuff says the series is about "how successive governments allowed investors to gain astonishing wealth while leaving everyday Kiwis behind,."

For the past 18 years I have published the NZ Property Magazine, I have been the president of the Rotorua Property Investors Association and have have some involvement with the NZ Property Investors Federation.

One of the comments I have repeated endlessly is that when it comes to defining property investors, it is not about age, gender or occupation.

What defines investors is they are ordinary Kiwis who have had the gumption to get off their arses and create some wealth, in the meantime taking on debt, risk and all the intracies of managing properties and tenants.

The Stuff tagline is embarrassing for the company as people senior editorial roles have become property investors themselves.
