Peninsula full to the brim

Thames Coromandel District Council's peak population survey shows an estimated 142,375 people were on the peninsula at its busiest.
The survey, presented to TCDC's policy and planning committee, used figures from Department of Conservation camping grounds, holiday camps, dairies and traffic counts from Boxing Day to January 4. There were also door-to-door counts at 850 residences.
A similar survey was done in 1997-98 when the peak population was estimated at 101,747.
