Super Fund creates CIO role

The Guardians of New Zealand Superannuation, the Crown entity that manages the $25 billion New Zealand Superannuation Fund, have appointed Matt Whineray to the role of Chief Investment Officer (CIO).

Whineray has held a series of senior roles at the Guardians since joining the organisation in 2008 as the General Manager Private Markets.  As CIO he will manage a team of 35 investment professionals with responsibility for asset allocation, public and private market investments globally and in New Zealand, responsible investment and the appointment of external investment managers.

He was formerly Head of Financial Sponsor Coverage for non-Japan Asia at Credit Suisse (Hong Kong). Prior to that, he was a managing director of First NZ Capital and a Vice President at Credit Suisse First Boston (New York). He began his career as a barrister and solicitor with Russell McVeagh.

“Matt brings integrity, leadership skills and intellectual strength to the newly created CIO role," Guardians chief executive Adrian Orr says. "His appointment as CIO is important to the ongoing success of the Fund.”
