Rules to keep out the ugly

Developers trying to push through buildings that clash with their surroundings will find it harder under proposed Auckland City Council rules.
A community planning group welcomes the clampdown, but says the politicians of are acting too late and have timed the announcement for the local body elections.
Councillors said last week they intend to force developers in six central Auckland areas to consider the look of the environment when designing new buildings.
The rules would apply to retail centres in Upper Symonds St, Kingsland, West Lynn, Grey Lynn, Eden Valley on Dominion Rd, and Ellerslie.
