ASB has new low interest environmental loans
The ASB Better Homes Top Up will allow existing home loan customers to borrow up to $80,000 to fund eligible improvements.
These include heating and insulation, solar panels or double-glazing. The purchases of electric and hybrid vehicles also qualify.
The rate is fixed for three years, after which the loan converts into a variable-rate loan.
A fee of $99 may apply in some cases.
ASB executive general manager for Personal Banking Adam Boyd said research shows many New Zealand homes are cold or damp at a risk to people's health.
“Our customers tell us they care about the environment and want to improve their impact,” he said.
ASB's move follows a trend. Westpac recently expanded its Warm Up Loan which offers interest- free loans up to half the ASB level. ANZ has a Good Energy Home Loan at 1%.
These and other programmes are believed to be driven by competition between banks as well as the need to retain existing customers by offering them top ups on their current mortgages.
