Tower plan stalls

Urban Auckland member Don McRae says colleagues pooled their own cash to challenge the development in the High Court, but this is not a possibility for some groups fighting equally worthy causes.

The risk paid off for the lobby group last week when the court ordered the Auckland City Council to rethink a 2003 decision to approve design plans for the St James building. The group won legal costs and disbursements.

The court criticised the council for failing to properly consider the design of the tower block, given it would become one of Auckland's largest structures in a prominent location.
