Watchdog wants consumer input in complaint process

The Consumers' Institute has asked for a more independent complaints procedure on real estate issues, saying the interests of consumers should dominate.

Institute chief executive David Russell has asked the ministry to change the disciplinary system to make it more independent from the industry's governing body, the Real Estate Institute.

"To provide credibility, it should be removed from the control of one of the parties likely to be complained about," Russell said in a submission to the ministry.
