The Bill, as currently written, will allow lawyers and conveyancers to sell real estate and to complete the transaction but will not enable real estate agents to complete the conveyancing for a transaction.
Making the point before Parliament's Justice & Law Reform select committee last week were Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) national president Graeme Woodley and REINZ executive director Boud Hammelburg.
Woodley told the committee the Bill would materially modify the relationship between lawyer and client, particularly when a lawyer is also acting as a real estate broker.
