Fidelity used as cover for drug ring
James Bell, manager - operations services at Fidelity since 2007, was sentenced today to six years and 10 months' jail, on six counts of importing methamphetamine and gamma-butyrolactone (GBL), and one count of possession of cannabis.
A police sting found Fidelity was being used as a safe address to help import drugs.
While working there, Bell imported 323g of meth and 1.9L of GBL.
Four people were involved in the drug operation, in which packages were handed to a Fidelity receptionist. Bell was the catcher and collected the drugs once they arrived.
"You thought delivery to a respectable business address would provide good cover," Justice Ailsa Duffy said in court.
Bell told the court his addiction was the result of working long hours.
In a statement, Fidelity Life said: "Fidelity Life was shocked and disappointed to learn of the offending by former employee James Bell. His employment was terminated in April 2016 as a result of the charges laid against him.
"We co-operated fully with the police throughout their investigation. Fidelity Life is an innocent party in this unfortunate matter and no other staff were implicated.”
